Western Living April 2015 Issue

A new magazine in the mail is always exciting. When that magazine contains my photographs, well, no matter how long I've been doing this I have to admit, it's always a thrill to see it in print! I had a lot of fun working with Stephanie Brown on this renovation story. A little behind the scenes secret: We decided to dress up the home with greenery we foraged from the backyard, and I can only imagine what the neighbours thought if they saw us giggling about how absurd we must look carrying an arm-full of branches into the house! You can see the full article online at Western Living.

Cal is an Australian trick rider who has spent many summers at the Palmer Ranch, an organic beef farm in Southern Alberta that sprawls towards the Rocky Mountains and is owned and run by the amazing Palmer family. The day I arrived at the ranch he was feeding chickens barefoot, whistling a tune, and smiling ear to ear at my arrival. We had talked about photographing him on the ranch for over a year and there we were, about to capture spontaneous and adventurous images which reflect the very core of Cal's personality. He was most excited to have me photograph him interacting and relaxing with the pack of thoroughbreds that graze closest to the farmhouses. They had welcomed him into their pack, as all who meet Cal do.

If you haven't explored Alberta and specifically Pincher Creek and Waterton in Southern Alberta, I would highly encourage you to go see the vibrant colors, instaworthy landscapes, wildlife, and even some real-life cowboys of the Wild West!

Fashionable Fiana and Abe were glowing throughout their sunny September wedding day!  Their wedding ceremony was very respectful to their traditional Othodox Jewish and Russian roots, which is why they asked me to be playful and bring the stylish energy of "Vogue Magazine" to their creative photo session. I met Fiana through a friend and client, Margaret, whose Italy wedding you will be seeing shortly.  Sitting at Cafe Beano, Fiana, Abe, and I discussed their wedding photography goals and the growing excitement to play and create on September 25, 2011.  "Phil, think Sex in the City, Vogue, Editorial!!"  Music to my ears!!  I try not to say "no" to the ideas that come into my mind, rather, I take the creative rabbit trails to find the perfect outcome for each client.  In this case, while sipping my apple juice (I'm not a coffee drinker), I envisioned Fiana and Abe walking a Giraffe on a leash down a suburban street.  Unfortunately Zoo animals are hard to come by in Calgary, so I continued down the road of creative visuals in my head and turned the idea into walking a pack of dogs down a suburban street.  I wanted this creative idea to feel like it should be in a scene for an upcoming Sex in the City film.  "Let's find a dog walking company!" I said.  When we couldn't find a local dog walking company that could align with our timeline then I moved to facebook to ask for any large dog, owners in Calgary, preferably a group of Great Danes.  This is when I met Gail, through my friend Charles, who owns Daisy, the sweetest and most relaxed Great Dane I have met.  Bringing a unique addition to the beginning of the wedding shoot gave Fiana, Abe, and the complete wedding party a blast of energy and excitement that carried through the rest of the day.
